As a wedding photographer in Auckland, NZ, I’ve had the privilege of capturing some incredible love stories, but Melani and Luke’s journey to the Hobbiton Movie Set was truly legendary. For these two hardcore Lord of the Rings fans from NYC, this wasn’t just a wedding—it was a pilgrimage to the heart of Middle-earth for a bespoke New Zealand elopement.
Melani, with her stunning half-Japanese and half-French heritage, brought an effortless, high-fashion grace to the Shire. Given her background as a model, she was incredibly natural in front of the camera. Luke, a professional tattooist with an eye for detail, was the perfect counterpart. Their chemistry made my job as their Auckland wedding photographer an absolute breeze, allowing us to capture authentic, candid moments against the iconic Matamata landscape.
Their vision was an intimate destination wedding in New Zealand, surrounded by twenty of their closest friends who flew in from around the globe. The guests fully embraced the “fun” vibe, with many incorporating subtle LOTR-inspired elements into their attire. Standing near the Green Dragon Inn, with the famous Hobbit holes nestled into the hills, the atmosphere was pure magic.
The ceremony was a beautiful blend of their diverse backgrounds and shared passions. Melani looked ethereal—like an Elven queen stepping out of the pages of Tolkien—while Luke’s joy was palpable as they exchanged vows. As a NZ wedding photographer, I live for these unique settings where the couple’s personality shines through every frame.
After the “I dos,” we explored the Shire for their wedding photos, stopping at the Party Tree and Bag End. Melani and Luke were so relaxed and genuine, soaking up every second of their “country-cosy” but epic celebration. Despite the journey from the Big Apple, they looked right at home amongst the rolling hills of the Waikato.
It was an absolute honour to be the one to document this NYC-meets-Middle-earth adventure. Their day was a powerful reminder that whether you’re in the heart of Auckland or the hills of Hobbiton, the best weddings are the ones that are authentically “you.”
